Shopify, built properly, by someone who sells on it

Shopify is the right store for most retailers, and the reason stores on it underperform is rarely Shopify. It is the product data, entered by hand and inconsistent; the theme, chosen for looks and slow on a phone; and the connections, to inventory and accounting, that were never made. The build fixes those three things and leaves the platform alone.

Shopify development is the store, the product data model and the connections to inventory and accounting, built for a Southwest Florida retailer or dealer in three to six weeks by an operator who runs his own brand on Shopify, scoped in writing, in your own Shopify account.

I read every one and reply within the day. When an off-the-shelf product covers it, I tell you which one and stop there.

  • One of my own companies is a lifestyle brand that sells on Shopify, with a catalogue that grew from a hundred products to nearly eight hundred on systems I built around it. This is a platform I run, not one I recommend from a distance.
  • A written scope and a fixed price before anything is built
  • Whatever is built is yours, with the documentation to prove it
  • No money from Shopify, so the recommendation is not for sale

Where shopify wins

First

Selling. Checkout, payments, shipping, taxes and fraud handled by a platform that does nothing else.

Second

Apps for the ordinary cases. Reviews, subscriptions, marketplaces, email, most of it a few clicks away.

Third

Hosting and uptime you never think about, for a monthly fee that is small against what it replaces.

Where it is the wrong tool

A business whose product is unusual enough that the catalogue rules do not fit a theme, or whose pricing moves with a market, or whose store is really a customer portal for orders that are not retail. Also not the place to run inventory for a business with stock that lives in more than one system; Shopify holds a count, it does not reconcile one. For those, custom code with Shopify as the checkout.

Who should pick it

Retailers, dealers and brands selling physical products with standard checkout needs, especially those already on Shopify with a messy catalogue. Luxury retail with piece-level records and photographs is a strong fit once the data model is designed properly.

What a build on shopify covers

A Shopify build starts with the product data model, because everything else depends on it: what a product is, what fields it carries, how variants and serials work. Then the theme, chosen for speed on a phone and fitted to your brand; the connections to inventory and accounting; the marketplace feeds; and the listing production process with a human review before anything goes live. Built in your Shopify account with your billing, so nothing depends on me. If a standard theme with good data entry would serve, that is what I scope.

Asked about Shopify

Do I need a Shopify developer or can I set it up myself?
A Shopify store can be set up by an owner for a simple catalogue with a standard theme, and many should be. A developer earns the fee when the product data is messy or unusual, when the store has to agree with an inventory system, or when the theme is slow and nobody knows why. The scope call tells you which you are.
Can Shopify handle serialized or one-of-a-kind products?
Shopify handles serialized and one-of-a-kind products when the data model is designed for it, with each piece a product or a variant that carries its own record, photographs and provenance. That design is the build. Out of the box, Shopify assumes you sell many of the same thing.
Can product listings be produced from our records?
Product listings can be produced from your product records and your existing catalogue voice, then reviewed by a person before publishing. That is how I grew a catalogue from a hundred to nearly eight hundred without writing each listing by hand, and nothing goes on a listing that did not come from the record.
